BlockBox
Ice Block and Clear Ice Freezer

Arising out of the need for my local fishing buddies to keep ice on their boats longer, brought about this build.  Well kind of, this was the evolution of its predecessor, which made only one 25 lb block at a time.  So when you need to keep things colder for longer you just go out and buy some block ice, right. Of course not, you have to build a dedicated block freezer or more precisely two.

Constructed by modifying an existing chest freezer.  Required freezing capacity was calculated and increased by 2800 BTU's by adding an additional condensing unit and evaporator. The unit can freeze 120 lbs of ice into blocks in approximately 15-18 hours depending on the ambient temperature.  8 aluminum molds were fabricated, which form the blocks.  Final dimensions of the blocks are 6" x 6" x 16".  Once freezing occurs, the additional unit is powered down and the chest freezer keeps the ice at sub-zero (F°) temperatures.

A clear ice mold system was also developed since not only did everyone like to fish, they also like to drink.  This system can be placed in the BlockBox overnight to make 72 crystal clear ice cubes.
